CBD for sleep
Many people find high quality CBD useful in treating disorders such as insomnia, poor sleep and restless leg syndrome. Sleep disorders refer to changes in sleep patterns or habits that negatively affect health. These disorders are surprisingly common, affecting 50-70 million adults in the United States.
Unfortunately, most doctors prescribe medication to combat sleep disorders rather than addressing the disorder naturally. Medications such as sleeping pills and allergy/cold medications are habit-forming, unhealthy and cause negative side effects when taken regularly. Your body develops a psychological dependence on sedative-hypnotic drugs such as Ambien and Lunesta, which often leave you feeling groggy in the morning, even after a full eight hours of sleep.
In addition to making lifestyle changes that facilitate better rest, taking CBD oil before bed can naturally help combat some nighttime discomfort. Later in the article, we’ll take a look at some of our favorite sleep-specific products.
Imagine waking up in the morning feeling rested and revitalized – no more grogginess or fatigue. To understand CBD’s potential to modulate sleep, we turn to a number of medical studies conducted over the past decade. These studies, the contextual links to which are given below, have evaluated the medical efficacy of CBD in the treatment of people suffering from various nocturnal problems. For starters, research on cannabis and sleep is in its infancy and has yielded mixed results. But there is more to it than that. The root cause of many of these disorders is anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder or another illness such as chronic pain, and cannabinoids can help relieve many of these conditions. So while cannabinoids are not inherently sedating – which, as discussed, is a good thing – they can act in a variety of ways to improve sleep quality.
Beneficial Properties of CBD for Sleep Patterns
CBD is one of the most promising breakthroughs for the nearly 70 million people in the United States believed to suffer from sleep disorders, including conditions such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea. Whether they cause problems falling asleep or staying asleep, the result is the same: insufficient quantity and/or quality of rest.
According to the CDC, not getting the recommended amount of sleep, at least seven hours per night, can lead to all sorts of unexpected health problems. We are all aware that poor sleep can lead to irritability, but it can also increase the risk of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Inadequate rest can also make people more likely to die or be injured in “drowsy driving” accidents.
The good news is that CBD can help! It has been shown to help users reduce factors that can directly affect the ability to fall or stay asleep, including pain, anxiety and depression. Due to its popularity, there are now many different products that can help you get a restful, quality night’s sleep. Below, we’ve broken down our favorites by category to help you get the sleep you truly deserve.

How We Rate CBD Products
Due to the lack of comprehensive federal regulation for CBD companies, We aimed to make brand accountability a priority for this industry. We independently test every type of product from a consumer perspective using a rigorous vetting process that brands must pass before we can recommend it to consumers. By following these guidelines, we ensure that CBD is not only safe, but also of the highest quality.
Every CBD brand we review must:
- Companies must use organic source material and all products must be created using CBD derived from hemp.
- They must implement safe and effective extraction methods.
- Carrier oils must also be safe and effective.
- Companies must conduct third-party laboratory testing for efficacy and safety.
Using the above criteria and testing each product ourselves, we have created a list of the best CBD products for a restful night’s sleep in 2021. We will discuss what sets them apart from the rest, why we endorse the product and who can benefit the most from it.
- Full Spectrum: “Whole plant” means hemp extract or “full spectrum” means a CBD product made with cannabinoids. In other words, full spectrum hemp formulas primarily contain CBD, but also contain trace amounts of other cannabinoids found in the original hemp material, including THC.
- Broad-spectrum: A broad-spectrum CBD product is similar to a full-spectrum CBD product in that it uses a “whole plant” extract full of CBD and other minor cannabinoids, but with one important difference – it does not contain THC.
- CBD isolate: CBD isolate is exactly what it sounds like – isolated CBD molecules. CBD isolate products contain no other cannabinoids, including THC and minor cannabinoids such as CBG or CBN.
- Cannabinoid: Cannabinoids are a diverse class of chemical compounds found in cannabis (and in the human body – they are called endocannabinoids) that act on cannabinoid receptors in the body. There are over 85 identified phyto cannabinoids, the most common being THC and CBD. These are the compounds responsible for the therapeutic effects associated with cannabis. COA:
- COA: Commonly used abbreviation for certificate of analysis or in other words third-party laboratory test results.

1. Best overall sleep product: FOCL Night Capsules
Everyone wants to get a good night’s sleep. FOCL Night Capsules are a complete game changer for your sleep regimen. What was impressive was not how well we slept or how quickly we were able to fall asleep (although that seems to happen a little faster each night after taking the dose), but how rested we felt when we woke up.
When combined with FOCL Day Capsules as part of the FOCL Wellness Stack, the secret weapon (adaptogens) in both products really shines. The 10 mg dose of hemp extract per serving means that we are happy to recommend these capsules even to novice CBD users, but keep in mind that they provide a highly optimized product that will benefit experienced users as well.

How to Use CBD for Sleep: Dosage and Suggested Use
Research is ongoing, but anecdotal evidence suggests that the relationship between the two is positive, with many people saying that regular doses of CBD help them get a good night’s sleep. Essentially, CBD products can be most effective when first used as a preventive measure. Creating a baseline concentration in the body and maintaining a regular dose helps stabilize the endocannabinoid system.
Many options are available, but to manage symptoms associated with different types of problems, we recommend consulting your doctor about including full-spectrum CBD oil daily in the form of tinctures or gel capsules for maximum relief.
Both products contain the same active ingredient: high quality full spectrum CBD oil. The main difference is in the dosage method – tinctures are taken sublingually, while capsules are swallowed like pills. A high-quality CBD product will also use the oil or capsules with MCT oil and the ingredients necessary for the body to fully absorb cannabidiol.
After regularly using CBD for sleep management, many people still need a safe way to manage acute symptoms. In addition to the products we described above, we recommend that you consider CBD vaporization to combat these sleep disorders. Vaporization is one of the fastest delivery mechanisms – it allows cannabidiol to be absorbed into the bloodstream almost instantly.
Often the best way to address moderate to severe sleep conditions is to combine different CBD products for all-day preventive and therapeutic coverage.
CBD as a sleep aid:
Your experience with cannabidiol (CBD) will be unique and requires very little attention to create a customized treatment. The best dosage for you will vary depending on personal factors such as tolerance to CBD products, weight, or the type and severity of the ailments you hope to manage.
We recommend that those suffering from such mental illnesses talk to their doctor about starting with a base dose of 5 to 10 mg of CBD per day.
If this dose does not provide relief, we recommend increasing the dose by another 5 to 10 mg per day until you feel complete relief. Tinctures make it easier to consume in this way as you can increase it in small increments, such as one or two drops at a time.
Alternatively, CBD capsules offer the convenience of pre-measured doses. Since CBD has no serious side effects and you cannot overdose, there is no harm in starting with a low dose of CBD tablets or softgel, for example 10 mg.
The time you should take CBD oil varies depending on the specific sleep disorder. This means that insomniacs should take it a few hours before bedtime, while those who suffer from excessive daytime fatigue should take it when they wake up in the morning.
Once you have established a basic dose and observed its effect, you can start to slowly increase the dose as needed. Since ingestible CBD products like these can have a delayed onset of action of up to 90 minutes, be sure to allow time between doses to observe the effects. However, the way the body slowly metabolizes these products can also explain the long-lasting relief they provide. In fact, many people report that the relief they get from the tincture and gel capsules lasts all day.
The dosage of CBD vaporizers varies, as it can be difficult to accurately measure doses without special instruments. However, the advantage of CBD vaporizers is that the effects start almost immediately. Since you can usually feel the full effect of vaporized cannabidiol within 10 minutes, you can easily take one puff at a time and watch until your symptoms subside.
A note on CBD and drug interactions
All of our partner companies have conducted extensive analysis on CBD and its practical uses before confirming the positive safety profile of the cannabinoid, and these brands make every effort to publicly display the laboratory reports on their websites. Despite the evidence that CBD is safe for most people, it is important to note that it can interact with common medications as it uses the same pathways for absorption via the liver enzymes cytochrome P450.
The interaction may include many of the prescription medications taken for these disorders, such as benzodiazepines or other nocturnal adjuvants, which use cytochrome P450 pathways for absorption. The interaction is not necessarily dangerous (unless the drug is prescribed to treat life-threatening conditions), but it can cause the drug to be less effective.
The effect of CBD on these liver enzymes is only temporary, so many people can solve this problem by staggering the doses of CBD and medication. Of course, you should always consult your doctor about CBD before use, especially if you take daily medication.

CBD and sleep: what are the benefits?
CBD was discovered nearly a century ago, but only recently have researchers begun to find evidence that CBD has significant health benefits. Although still in its infancy, research on CBD is advancing rapidly. Due to various anecdotal reports and scraps of information regarding the participation of the endocannabinoid delivery system in sleep-wake cycles, researchers have become increasingly interested in the effects of CBD.
One controversial side of the debate suggests that CBD has wakefulness-promoting properties, which may sound counterintuitive, but may be useful for dealing with things like daytime fatigue. Evidence suggests that cannabidiol may be useful for addressing many of the underlying conditions that cause these problems, which has led to research on the use of CBD specifically for PTSD-related insomnia.
In fact, many studies have confirmed the potential anxiolytic effects of CBD, and one of the main ways cannabidiol can improve your sleep is by improving overall stress and tension. The same rule applies to insomnia caused by pain, which can respond well to CBD treatment.
Sleep is an area of particular interest to researchers because much of the research we have on CBD for sleep is preliminary. More understanding is needed before CBD is officially recognized as a way to treat insomnia and other problems. It is expected that research efforts on CBD for sleep will continue to increase, but the following studies show a beneficial link between cannabidiol and sleep:
Efficacy of CBD oil for insomnia as part of pediatric anxiety and PTSD: A 2016 study evaluated the effect of cannabidiol on a 10-year-old girl with pediatric anxiety and PTSD. “Pharmaceutical drugs provide partial relief, but the results are not long-lasting and have serious side effects. The CBD oil trial resulted in a sustained reduction in anxiety and a steady improvement in the patient’s quality and quantity of sleep. An increasingly popular treatment for anxiety and sleep problems, CBD oil has been documented as an effective alternative to pharmaceutical drugs. This case study published clinical data supporting the use of CBD oil as a safe treatment to reduce anxious thoughts and improve sleep in a young girl with post-traumatic stress disorder.”
Cannabis, cannabinoids, and sleep: a literature review
A 2017 review of clinical data and existing research on cannabinoids concludes that “CBD may be promising for [combating] REM sleep behavior disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness…”
Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series
2019 clinical data series and case studies, “The final sample consisted of 72 adults presenting with underlying anxiety or inadequate rest concerns. Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and continued to decrease throughout the study period. These scores improved in 48 patients (66.7%) within the first month, but changed over time. In this chart review, CBD was well tolerated in all but three patients.”
Note About CBD and Drug Testing
If drug testing is part of your conditions of employment, you may be concerned about the potential for CBD to cause you to test positive for THC. This is not an unfounded concern – but there is no surefire way to address it.
Most of the evidence on CBD is anecdotal, and its potential impact on drug testing is no exception. There are very few peer-reviewed studies on the subject, but there appears to be a small risk of false positives for some users. Avoiding full-spectrum CBD products containing trace amounts of THC may reduce the risk of false positives, but may not completely eliminate the risk. While there is a small risk of failing a drug test, CBD itself has no psychoactive effects.
If you are concerned about failing a drug test, you should consider this potential risk when deciding whether CBD is right for you. To learn more about the science of CBD, purchase a drug test with your preferred CBD and take the test yourself for peace of mind.
