Benefits of CBD and Other Cannabinoids for Athletes

If you are an athlete or someone who participates in sports, you are probably familiar with the feeling of fatigue that comes from a game day or a tough workout. You may also be familiar with the feeling of nausea or fatigue from dehydration.

These factors are just a few concerns for athletes that you may have experienced at certain points in your athletic career. Athletes are starting to look at cannabis products as an all-natural alternative to help with conditions such as muscle fatigue, inflammation and pain relief.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

Both CBD and THC are extremely effective for dealing with inflammation after exercise. Cannabinoids are powerful anti-inflammatory agents and exert their effects by inducing apoptosis, inhibiting cell proliferation, suppressing cytokine production and inducing T regulatory cells (Treg).

Inflammation is a common condition experienced by most athletes. Thanks to scientific research, CBD products have been shown to reduce inflammation.

CBD can help fight inflammation, which often leads to muscle pain and higher levels of stress in the body. Studies have also shown that CBD can help with conditions such as psoriasis, lupus and Crohn’s disease.

Whether you are an athlete suffering from muscle and connective tissue pain, or a person recovering from surgery or trauma, CBD can be a great alternative for you. CBD has also been proven to help speed up the healing process, or if you are looking for an alternative pharmaceutical solution.

The options are endless when it comes to choosing a CBD product to reduce inflammation. Vaporizers and flowers are great for instant relief, while topical products and tinctures are great for topical treatments and long-lasting relief. One of our favorite topical products to use for muscle pain is SeaBeDee’s Muscle and Joint Relief Cream.

Sleep and Relaxation

Cannabinoids are known to have both a relaxing and calming effect on users. In fact, cannabis with CBN concentrations approaching 1% by weight may be useful in treating insomnia. Getting the sleep you need every night is perhaps the most important aspect of being a healthy athlete – muscles grow and recover best during deep sleep.

Sleep allows muscles to recover, especially after a busy day and stressful evening routine. But pain and constant inflammation can disrupt your sleep. Finding a way to keep pain at bay will lead to better sleep.

Studies have shown that CBD can induce sleep and help maintain all stages of sleep before a person wakes up. These studies show that sleep patterns improved in 67% of participants. Cannabidiol helps soothe pain by fighting inflammation and reducing pain.

The relaxation and calm environment caused by CBD lulls you to sleep for a short time. The muscles have the opportunity to fully recover as CBD helps with better healing and recovery. It prepares your muscles for what the next day brings.

Athletes often suffer from insomnia and sleep deprivation due to aching muscles, long hours of workouts and grueling training routines. If you are an athlete looking to improve your sleep, your solution could be as simple as incorporating a daily CBD product into your routine.

ThC, one of the main cannabinoids, is known to induce sleep and also helps people with sleep apnea. THC can even help people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by suppressing dreams. On the other hand, CBD, the other main active ingredient in cannabis, can help relieve daytime fatigue and REM sleep disorder.

CBD has been shown to improve sleep quality and duration while reducing the effects of fatigue. Overall, getting deeper sleep and waking up with refreshed energy will have a dramatic impact on your overall performance.

Medically speaking, CBN is considered the most powerful sedative among known cannabinoids. Its sedative effects are so strong that cannabis with CBN concentrations approaching 1% by weight may be useful in treating insomnia. According to Steep Hill Labs, 2.5-5 mg of CBN is as effective as a 5-10 mg dose of diazepam. CBN is synergistic with CBD and THC in the right proportions to induce sleep.

If you are looking for an alternative to traditional sleep medications that can be habit-forming, you may want to consider looking at cannabis products as an alternative to pharmaceuticals.

Reducing Nausea

Cannabis has antiemetic effects that help athletes reduce nausea during and after exercise. In fact, many studies have shown that cannabinoids are more effective than older drugs such as phenothiazines (e.g. Stemetil®) or antihistamines (e.g. Dramamine®) in treating nausea and vomiting.

Reducing muscle spasms

Cannabinoids are known to have antispasmodic properties. Some causes of muscle cramps in athletes include muscle strain, dehydration, trauma and nerve or spinal cord damage. THCa, THC, CBC, CBC, CBD and CBN are recognized for their antispasmodic effects.

Muscle Recovery

After exercise, athletes are likely to experience muscle fatigue, soreness, stiffness and other symptoms.

Recent preliminary results from research and studies have revealed that cannabis may help prevent delayed onset muscle soreness, also known as DOMS. (Gillman et al, Cannabis and Exercise Science, 2015)

CBD-rich strains have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that counteract muscle soreness and help speed recovery after exercise.

Try topical solutions and ointments with high concentrations of CBD to help with muscle soreness and speed up the recovery process.

Our favorite topical remedy for relieving muscle pain is SeaBeDee’s Muscle and Joint Relief Cream, and VitaHempOil’s CBD Muscle Gel is a close second.

Athletes and anyone who leads an active lifestyle face many challenges while performing their daily tasks. Some of them face anxiety attacks due to intense stress, which can affect their performance levels. The stress associated with daily routines and the pressure to perform well can also do a lot of damage to self-esteem and confidence levels.

Applying CBD oil can reverse this discomfort associated with general anxiety. Studies have shown that CBD can even protect the brain and prevent further damage. These neuroprotective abilities provide relief from associated anxieties and improve an individual’s cognitive function.

THC has also been reported to contribute to an antidepressant-like effect when combined with CBD and CBG in a full-spectrum antagonistic effect.

Appetite + Digestion Enhancement

Cannabis is a safe way to stimulate appetite. Strength athletes, MMA fighters and other athletes with demanding diets often find that cannabis encourages them to take in more calories than they otherwise would. Cannabis increases levels of ghrelin and leptin, two key hormones that regulate hunger, without significantly altering insulin levels.

One of the main concerns of athletes is a balanced diet, optimal digestion and getting enough nutrients to fuel muscles. A problem athletes often face is not getting enough calories to support their active lifestyle.

Cannabis is a safe and effective way to stimulate appetite. Strength athletes, MMA fighters and other athletes with demanding diets often find that cannabis encourages them to take in more calories for sustained energy. Studies have shown that cannabis can help improve appetite by increasing levels of ghrelin and leptin, two hormones that regulate hunger.

Cannabis can also help with digestive problems such as constipation, indigestion and internal inflammation.

THC is not the only compound that allows people to use cannabis to stimulate appetite. Researchers have found that another cannabinoid – cannabigerol (CBG) – can also help trigger appetite.

Studies have shown that CBG can trick a person’s brain into thinking the body is hungry. Like THC, CBG has been shown to increase appetite, but unlike THC, it is not psychoactive.

Until now, CBG has been considered an appetite stimulant in addition to being non-psychoactive. Furthermore, according to a study published in June 2017, CBG is useful for reducing inflammation and inhibiting the growth of bacteria or the proliferation of tumor cells.

Protecting the heart, lungs and brain

In several studies, CBD has been shown to reduce inflammation and provide protection to the heart, lungs and brain during and after injury. In fact, the short-term neuroprotective effects of CBD on the brain continue to be studied with the aim of treating sports concussions.

Helping with concussions and brain injuries

If you have ever been an athlete or know someone who plays sports, you may be familiar with concussions.

Researchers are particularly interested in the effect of CBD in the field of brain injuries, and many studies have shown a clear link between CBD and the brain, with most emphasis on the neuroprotective properties of cannabidiol.

Additional research suggests that cannabidiol may be effective in reversing some brain injuries or preventing further damage from serious brain injuries during their treatment.

Improved pain tolerance

Cannabis is an analgesic that helps relieve pain during and after exercise. Some athletes manage to raise their pain threshold by using cannabis before exercise. Andrea Giuffrida, associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, explains that “the endocannabinoid system works like endorphins” – aerobic exercise actually activates the endocannabinoid system in the same way as the cannabis plant. Thus, endocannabinoids (produced naturally in the body without the help of cannabis), which regulate pain, mood and memory, can help you endure an intense workout, similar to the effects of endorphins.

Preliminary studies have shown that THCa has strong anti-inflammatory properties and is particularly useful for managing severe pain caused by inflammation in patients with lupus and arthritis. Other medicinal benefits of THCa include neuroprotective, antiemetic (anti-vomiting) and antiproliferative properties.

Cannabis is an analgesic that helps relieve pain during and after exercise. Many athletes, such as Olympian Ross Rebagliati, use cannabis after training to continue managing pain from stiff muscles.

Strenuous exercise can also lead to micro-tears in muscles. These tears cause enormous inflammation that can cause pain throughout the body. Exercise is a major cause of pain and injuries that just won’t go away. The constant pain you feel in your joints is the result of not getting enough rest and not having enough time for a full recovery.

Studies confirm the role of CBD in reducing inflammation. CBD has shown that adding this herb to their routine prevents pain from developing further. As a result, it has prevented arthritis, especially in the joints, ensuring that there is no further nerve damage.

Creativity

Hemp is believed to promote creativity by allowing the brain to connect seemingly unrelated concepts. This in turn allows athletes such as skiers, surfers and mountain bikers to choose more creative lines and make connections they would not otherwise be able to make. Many athletes self-report an increased sense of fluidity or vitality when using cannabis in sports.

Mood enhancement

Cannabis is a mood enhancer that helps athletes enjoy and focus on repetitive athletic tasks such as running long distances or enduring a grueling training session.

Improving Overall Performance

Personal performance is easily affected by the smallest elements in a person’s training program. If muscles are very sore, performance is likely to be lower than usual.

CBD helps reduce muscle inflammation, which in turn increases endurance levels. With the added relief and faster recovery time, you can resume strenuous activities. CBD can also help with sleepwalking and combines well with CBD to improve muscle regeneration.

Flow State and Cannabis

Have you ever felt “in the zone”? That beautiful balance of exhilarating slow motion, when you can predict your next move with ease and precision – your performance becomes subconscious perfection. You are essentially completely immersed in the activity at hand.

The experience of flow is often characterized by a spontaneous feeling of joy and euphoria, despite the fact that there is no deep focus on anything other than the activity – not even on yourself or your emotions. This is the same feeling that artists, athletes, performers and professionals experience when they “immerse themselves in their work”, neglecting the need for food, water and sleep.

In the field of psychology this is known as flow, a state of mental work in which the person performing an activity is completely immersed in the feeling of energetic focus, full participation and enjoyment of the process of activity. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a psychologist at Claremont Graduate University, coined the term “flow”, but the phenomenon has existed in other forms for thousands of years. According to Csikszentmihalyi, flow is a completely focused motivation. It involves total mental immersion and keeping emotions positive, energized and in tune with the task at hand.

Conditions for the flow state

Except for basic bodily functions such as hunger and pain, people can decide what they want to focus their attention on. However, when a person is in a state of flow, they are completely immersed in their activities and lose awareness of everything else without making a conscious decision about it. Since the person in the flow state has all their attention focused on the immediate task at hand, there is no need to pay more attention to things like time, people, distractions and bodily functions.

The flow state can be entered while engaged in any activity; however, it is more likely to occur when one is engaged in an activity that has an inner purpose. Passive activities such as taking a shower and watching television do not usually lead to flow experiences because the individual is not actively engaged. Whatever the specific activity, three external conditions need to be met in order to enter the flow state:

  1. Clear goals. Adding direction and structure to the task creates a goal.
  2. Precise feedback. You can immediately negotiate new requirements and adjust your performance to maintain the flow state.
  3. Potential for success. Balance the perceived challenges of the activity with your perceived ability to perform positively.

Components of Flow

John Nakamura and Csikszentmihalyi have identified six factors that encompass the flow experience. Although these elements can occur independently of each other, it is only when they come together that they constitute the flow experience.

  1. Combination of action and awareness as participation in the activity becomes both automatic and spontaneous
  2. Focusing only on yourself, which creates a loss of reflective self-awareness
  3. Intense and purposeful concentration on the present moment
  4. With practice, You develop a sense of control over the activity
  5. Slowly, your experience of time changes
  6. You experience intrinsic enjoyment of the experience, also called automatic bodily experience

Components of cannabis

Many athletes have pre-competition treatments designed to increase concentration and motivation. Some use meditation techniques, while others choose less traditional means such as cannabis consumption. You might wonder how cannabis can help an elite athlete competing internationally, but the parallels between cannabis and flow are more than just a coincidence. Cannabis produces a range of effects in its users; those related to flow are as follows (corresponding to numbers 1-6 above):

  1. Cannabis unifies mind and body, promoting spirituality and reducing feelings of self
  2. Provides a relaxed state of mind, relieving stress and anxiety
  3. Sativa produces a sense of focus and increased energy levels
  4. Cannabinoids have been shown to regulate neuroplasticity, structural changes and new connections,

Individual response to cannabis and the flow state

But if sporting activities provide an ideal opportunity to enter the flow state, why is it so difficult to trigger it on command? The short answer is that the conditions of the activity or the mental demands of the participant are not met. The goal is to choose an activity that you are competent and excited about and then use cannabis as a tool to promote the ideal mindset.

Cannabis, like diet and general nutrition, can both enhance and impair a person’s performance in relation to athletics. The challenge of incorporating cannabis into a sports regimen is choosing the right strain, dosage and delivery method.

We can help you learn more about how to use cannabis in training and how to use cannabis for recovery. You can also check out our dosage guide and our guide to unlocking your full athletic potential using cannabis with Olympian Ross Rebagliati.

Elite athletes using cannabis

You may not know it (because many athletes have to hide their use), but cannabis use among elite athletes is very common. Athletics by its very nature creates the conditions necessary to trigger a state of flow. It is therefore not surprising that many athletes have experienced the flow state while training or competing.

Many elite athletes train under the influence of cannabis and consider it an essential part of their fitness program. While THC has many beneficial properties that can help you maximize your training, it is not the only cannabinoid that can give you the boost you are looking for. CBD can be legally purchased online in all 50 states and can provide many of the same benefits as THC, but without the psychoactive effects that deter some potential users.

In the context of sports, Roy Palmer suggests that “being in the zone” can actually influence movement patterns, as better integration of conscious and subconscious reflex functions improves coordination. It is not uncommon for athletes to describe their performance during personal bests as effortless and natural.

Here are a few statistics:

  • Olympic gold medalist Ross Rebagliati won the giant slalom at the 1998 Nagano Games.
  • A pioneering freestyle skier and 7-time X-Games gold medalist Tanner Hall became the first professional athlete to sponsor a professional cannabis model, incorporating cannabis into his skiing and recovery regimens
  • Former NFL lineman Lomas Brown said,
  • Former NBA guard Robert Pack once put the rate of marijuana use in the federation at 70 percent
  • 39-year-old elite triathlete Clifford Drusinski.) In 2013, he was on the podium in his age group in nine major triathlons, former Denver Broncos tight end Nate Jackson used cannabis to cope with pain during his six seasons in the NFL
  • International cricket star Sir Ian Botham regularly used cannabis throughout his career
  • Professional wrestler Rob Van Damme, He has publicized his cannabis use, stating that he knows “boxers, bodybuilders, cyclists, runners and athletes from all walks of life who train and compete using cannabis.”
  • Professional skateboarder Bob Burquist has publicly stated that he “learned a lot of tricks while high.”

CBD’s Pre + Post Workout Benefits

While using hemp as a pre-workout supplement may sound nerdy, it’s not uncommon for elite athletes to use hemp as both a preparation and recovery tool. After an intense exercise or training session, you may feel tired, achy and even nauseous. Many people in this situation may pop two or three ibuprofen, have a beer to calm down and say that everything is fine.

But what you may not realize is that NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and Aleve can be extremely dangerous, especially when used regularly. If deaths from the toxic effects of NSAID drugs were presented separately, these drug toxic effects would represent the 15th most common cause of death in the United States.

This is why we recommend athletes use a more potent, less toxic and naturally occurring cannabinoid like CBD. In this guide, we’ll help you understand the benefits of CBD as a recovery tool and how to utilize them in your own post-workout regimen.

But now you might be thinking “I had a great workout, I’m high, the last thing I want to do is get ‘high'”. No need for that – you can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of cannabis without the psychoactivity. How is this possible? Simply put, the beauty of CBD.

CBD as a pre-workout supplement

If you are a fitness enthusiast, you are probably familiar with pre-workout supplements that are often sold to people looking for a burst of energy before hitting the gym. The problem with these products is that they are often loaded with caffeine and other stimulants as well as synthetic ingredients whose effects have not been well researched. All that caffeine can lead to a crash (the last thing you need when you’re trying to push your limits in the gym or on the track) and these supplements can cause unwanted side effects. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get the pre-workout mood-enhancing effects without the added stimulants? CBD tinctures can be dripped under the tongue and take effect quickly, but CBD can also be vaporized or smeared in the form of CBD vaping oil or 99% pure isolate. Inhaled CBD works fastest and the effects last about 3-4 hours, giving you plenty of time for an intense workout. Tinctures start working in about 15 minutes and are effective for up to 6 hours.

A slower but longer-acting option is also available in the form of CBD softgel capsules. These start to kick in after about 45 minutes, but their effects last up to 8 hours, making them ideal for endurance training or large events such as a marathon or 10K run.

CBD can provide the benefits of a pre-workout supplement without the drawbacks: its anti-inflammatory properties can help prepare your muscles for the intense activity ahead, helping you lift an extra 10 pounds or literally run an extra mile on the treadmill. Its mood-enhancing properties also help prepare you for training by reducing stress and allowing your mind to relax as you prepare for your sports session.

CBD as a post-workout supplement

There are several ways to take CBD after training. If you are like most of us, you are looking for fast-acting relief after leaving the gym. This is best accomplished by vaporizing CBD oil, which is absorbed through the lung tissue and enters the bloodstream, so it has an immediate effect. Another option with a similar effect is dabbing CBD isolate. You can also smoke a flower high in CBD if you prefer (choose an indica strain for maximum relaxation and anti-inflammatory benefits). Our favorite high-CBD flower is called Lifter by Canna Comforts.

If you prefer not to inhale CBD, you can also take it orally in the form of tincture or CBD softgel capsules. These forms take a little longer to take effect – about 15 minutes for tinctures and about 45 minutes for softgels – but their effects are powerful and long-lasting – between 6 and 8 hours.

If you do a lot of exercise at the gym, it may be a good idea to combine a faster form, such as vaporization, with a longer-lasting form, such as CBD softgels. This will help relieve sudden pain and fatigue while preventing inflammation over a longer period of time, helping you recover faster and feel your strongest self faster.

If you find that you need topical relief after an injury or strain, CBD topical ointment can work wonders. While CBD in topical medicines works against inflammation on a superficial level, your systemic CBD (such as softgels or vaporizers) works from the inside to relieve internal inflammation. Use both together for maximum effectiveness, especially if you’ve injured yourself after an intense workout session.

For topical pain relief, we highly recommend Seabedee’s Muscle and Joint Relief Cream.

When using cannabis for physical and mental recovery, you’ll likely be looking for pain-relieving, relaxing and anti-inflammatory strains. These properties are primarily found in indica strains and strains with high levels of cannabidiol (CBD). Indica strains of cannabis provide athletes with a deeply relaxing body high that helps both the mind and muscles relax, and you can get them without THC.

If you want to avoid that “high” or that feeling of being glued to the couch, you should try a non-psychoactive strain rich in CBD. CBD has a wider range of therapeutic benefits than any other cannabinoid and is effective even in small doses. Therefore, I recommend choosing an indica-dominant strain and/or a CBD-rich strain to take advantage of these beneficial effects post-workout.

CBD targets the same inflammation that NSAIDs treat, relieving it (and the pain it causes) naturally and without unwanted side effects – your liver will thank you. CBD is also a natural analgesic (or painkiller), meaning it has properties that help stop pain. It is especially beneficial after an intense workout, as it relieves muscle pain and reduces underlying inflammation. This reduction in inflammation can help speed up muscle recovery in the long term, in addition to the short-term relief it provides.

CBD also has antiemetic properties, meaning it can help with the feeling of nausea that is common, especially after an intense workout. Its antispasmodic effects can also help alleviate or eliminate muscle cramps and spasms, preventing the onset of “Charlie Horse” late at night or uncomfortable leg cramps that can keep you awake.

How to consume cannabis before training

In general, most athletes will benefit from including a sativa strain in their pre-workout program, as opposed to an indica strain, which is better suited for recovery. Sativa strains provide more energy, focus, creativity and euphoria.

On the other hand, indica strains provide stress and anxiety relief, suppress nausea and stimulate appetite, making them an excellent choice for post-workout cannabis therapy.

There are also hybrid strains that have both indica and sativa properties. Because each of us has a unique brain and endocannabinoid system, we all react to cannabis in slightly different ways. This means choosing strains is easier said than done, but a quick chat with your budtender or medical professional will help you find the right sativa for your next workout.

Popular sativa strains often end in “haze”, such as Super Silver Haze, Super Lemon Haze, Purple Haze, Ghost Train Haze. Other popular sativa strains include Sour Diesel, Jack Herer, Durban Poison, Acapulco Gold, East Coast Sour Diesel, Strawberry Cough and Green Crack.

Choose a method of consumption

Vaporizers, edibles, tinctures and topicals are best for athletes. Despite its widespread use, smoking cannabis is actually not a preferred method of consumption for most athletes. Smoking is not as effective at delivering isolated cannabinoids (the therapeutic compounds in cannabis). Remember, the THC in your edibles or vaporizers comes from cannabis buds, so make sure the edible or concentrate is labeled sativa.

Vaporizing

Vaporizing flowers or cannabis concentrates will provide immediate benefits and the effects will last 30 to 90 minutes. You will get the same effects if you make a dab. Riding a solvent-free sativa hybrid before skiing really helps us to find the flow.

Edibles

Ingesting cannabis causes a delayed onset of use. The relief probably won’t be felt for 30+ minutes, but the effects will last 2-4+ hours, making it ideal for endurance-related activities like running, backpacking, climbing or swimming.

Tinctures

It’s one of the more discreet options, but a bit harder to obtain in illegal states (you can still make your own). The relief will probably not be felt for 15+ minutes; however, the effect will last 1-3+ hours.

Local Remedies

Ideal for treating muscle, joint and surface pain. This type of treatment does not provide the typical “high” of THC, but is only localized pain relief, similar to Bengay or IcyHot.

We highly recommend Seabedee’s muscle and joint relief cream and Joy Organics’ sports cream.

Start with a small dose

Managing the dose can be the most difficult part of the process. That’s why you should try all new cannabis products in a comfortable environment at home to see how your body reacts before incorporating them into your workout regimen. Research and anecdotal evidence suggests that there is a fine line between performance enhancement and performance degradation.

Dosage in this case means managing the amount of THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis (as other beneficial compounds such as CBD are not psychoactive). You will notice that the recommended dosages vary according to each method of consumption.

Vaporization

Just take a few slow, steady breaths; the effect will be felt within a few minutes. Wait at least 15 minutes before deciding to repeat. You can always take a portable vaporizer with you for additional dosing. Our favorite vaporizers come from Bloomgroove, which has a wide range of high quality and affordable vaporizers.

Edibles

For occasional users, we recommend 5-10 mg THC. In the state of Colorado, 10 mg is considered a single serving size.

Tips

2-4 drops of the cannabinoid-rich liquid under the tongue is usually a sufficient starting dose. The effect will be felt in about 15 minutes.

Local Remedies

Start with a few puffs or a few pumps and apply as many more as you like. Since they are non-psychoactive, there is little risk of overdoing it.

Best Practices for Cannabis Workouts

Get Outside

Going to the gym probably won’t offer the experience you were hoping for. The energetic nature of cannabis sativa can sometimes cause anxiety, so you don’t want to be on the treadmill or recliner wondering if everyone knows you’re on drugs. Go to the park, the trail, the beach, the mountains… anywhere there is fresh air and space to connect body and mind.

Choose the right activity

For your first experience, it is important to choose an activity that you are competent at and feel passionate about. Unless you are Travis Pastrana, consuming cannabis before trying a new sport probably won’t do much good. It is also important to set yourself challenging but achievable goals for the activity. In practice, this means choosing the right ski slope or a realistic time to run.

Push yourself

Cannabis is a mood enhancer that raises the pain threshold, which means you won’t hate that grueling hill or that last lap as much. As some athletes say, THC helps you accept pain.

Find your zone

Everyone reacts differently to each type of cannabis, which means that some activities and strains will adapt better than others. For example, someone who does yoga for an hour will want a completely different strain, dosage and consumption method than backpackers. Use CBD liberally

Hemp is an extremely powerful plant from a medicinal point of view. There are certain strains that are rich in a compound called CBD. Instead of making you “high”, CBD works in countless ways to heal your body.
