  • Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus is widely used for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties (and its ability to clear a stuffy nose). The extract of eucalyptus, an aromatic tree native to Australia, may play a role in relieving neuropathic pain. Although the mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated, two factors appear to be at work. Eucalyptus exhibits pain-relieving properties when applied topically and may help reduce the sensitivity of damaged nerves by regulating their firing. Secondly, the aroma of eucalyptus may reduce the perception of pain by affecting the processing of pain signals by the central nervous system. People with asthma should be warned that eucalyptus may trigger attacks in some people (but may be beneficial for others).
  • Feverfew – The name of this herb comes from its traditional use in treating pain and inflammation. The leaves and flowers of feverfew, also known as bachelor’s mace, produce compounds that reduce muscle spasms and the burning, tingling, prickling sensation associated with neuropathic pain. It has been shown to have analgesic and antispasmodic properties when applied to the skin, but how these effects occur is not fully understood. New research suggests that this may be due to the terpenes, flavonoids and other bioactive compounds in poplar extract. If this is the case, these terpenes and other phytochemicals may help support the dose of CBD in a topical pain reliever.
  • Ginger – A favorite savory in the kitchen, ginger’s use as an anti-inflammatory, pain reliever and antiemetic is well documented in history. The root extract of the plant can help relieve neuropathic pain and soothe inflamed nerves when applied topically. It can also cause a mild warming and tingling of the skin, which helps to numb neuropathic pain while desensitizing damaged nerves and regulating their firing. These benefits are also evident when ginger is consumed (although a separate supplement should be used), indicating that it may also be beneficial in the diet of people struggling with neuropathy. People with ginger allergies or certain sensory integration issues should exercise caution before using topical CBD products made with ginger.
  • Lavender – A perennial favorite in aromatherapy and home fragrances, lavender has long had anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and hypnotic properties. The herb has been used in the past against pain, fever and seizures, and current research suggests it may have antispasmodic properties. One study shows that rosemary is effective in relaxing smooth muscles (muscles over which you have no conscious control; they contract involuntarily and can cause debilitating pain due to their proximity to organs and bones). This property may make rosemary a soothing antispasmodic additive to topical CBD products for neuropathic pain.
  • Turmeric – Turmeric, a brightly colored root popular in Southeast Asian cuisine, is extremely high in a compound called curcumin. Curcumin is used to fight pain, fever and inflammation, and research suggests it may also be useful against neuropathic pain. Although more studies are needed, curcumin relieves pain by acting on receptors that can help block neuropathic pain signals. Synergy between THC and CBD

Some studies have shown a synergistic relationship between THC and CBD, especially in medical applications. A 2008 study found that there is evidence to support a synergistic relationship between cannabinoids and terpenes, particularly in the treatment of the following conditions: chronic inflammation, pain, anxiety and depression; epilepsy; cancer; fungal and bacterial infections; and addiction. The exact mechanism of this synergy is not yet known. The same study found that the combination of THC and CBD is a suitable substitute for opioid painkillers, meaning that the use of THC and CBD isolates alone is sufficient to replace opioids in patient care and treatment regimens.
