Best Practices: CBD Products for Mental Health

When developing a CBD routine to help manage a condition, you should first understand that CBD has not yet been proven effective as a treatment for any of these mental health conditions. However, anecdotal evidence encourages many people to try CBD for themselves. Like many medications and supplements used to treat mental health, you first want to establish a baseline concentration in your body by taking CBD regularly. CBD can then also be used to manage acute flare-ups or bad days, giving you maximum relaxation throughout the day.

There are many different CBD products available, but for mental health management we recommend using full spectrum CBD oil daily, preferably in the form of a tincture or gel capsule.

These two products are almost identical except for the form factor and dosage or the difference between a sublingual tincture and an oral capsule. When looking for high quality tinctures and capsules, keep in mind that CBD must be combined with a carrier oil such as MCT oil or hemp seed oil in order to be properly absorbed by the body.

Acute flare-ups often occur in depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, where individual experiences are more intense due to situational or individual factors. To combat these acute exacerbations, we recommend CBD isolate vaporization. We often find that vaporization is the best consumption method to deal with sudden flare-ups. When you vaporize CBD isolate, a 99% pure version of CBD, you can feel almost instant relief all over your body.

You can also take more of your chosen capsule or tincture to help manage these acute flare-ups, but the effects will take significantly longer to appear.

Managing acute exacerbations of anxiety, depression or PTSD

If you prefer, you can take more gel capsules or tinctures to combat acute exacerbations, but keep in mind that their effect lasts significantly longer than vaporized CBD for anxiety – about 1.Many people find that the most effective CBD regimen for anxiety involves a combination of high quality CBD products and your CBD regimen should be unique to you.

Other methods of consumption

Gel capsules come in pre-measured doses and the average dose is about 10 mg each. Fortunately, you cannot overdose on CBD, so you can start with a 10 mg capsule or as much as you are comfortable with.

Then monitor the effects and increase the dose as needed to eliminate symptoms. Note that tinctures and gel capsules take longer to metabolize, so they usually provide a longer-lasting effect. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression affects more than 350 million people of all ages worldwide. Untreated depression can lead to many negative health effects and even premature death, so it is important that depression is addressed.

The most common medical treatments for depression in the United States are pharmaceutical drugs that work to correct chemical imbalances in the brain. These can include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and their cousins serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (or SNRIs), antipsychotics (and/or atypical antipsychotics), dopamine agonists, and many of the drugs used to treat anxiety, such as benzodiazepines.

The problem with these drugs is that they often cause addiction problems. Moreover, the list of side effects far outweighs the benefits – why is suicide an accepted side effect of antidepressants? We don’t know the answer to this question, but we do know that many people are giving up these traditional medications and turning to more natural treatment methods, in many cases CBD. Current evidence, although preliminary, supports the theory of CBD for depression and other mood disorders.

To demonstrate the therapeutic potential of CBD for depression, we will analyze a number of studies conducted over the last 10 years. Below, we will outline the results of these studies, highlighting the key findings. We will also provide some guidance on dosage strategy, along with a note on potential drug interactions.

Studies Supporting CBD Potential for Depression

The discovery of the CBD molecule dates back nearly a hundred years, but research on the therapeutic value of cannabis has primarily focused on THC until recently. Now, experts are beginning to shed light on the therapeutic value of CBD, and research into the use of the non-psychoactive cannabinoid is expanding rapidly.

With this in mind, information on the use of cannabidiol for mental health conditions such as depression is in high demand. 10 Effective Tips to Overcome Seasonal Depression

A 2011 double-blind study evaluated the use of CBD to treat Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) in a format where participants simulated public speaking. The study found that “pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort in speech performances and significantly reduced anxiety in anticipatory speeches. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a very common disorder with more than 3 million cases per year in the United States. Symptoms of PTSD are often disturbing, including nightmares, avoidance of certain activities, exacerbated reactions, depression and anxiety.

The most common treatment for PTSD in the US is pharmaceutical drugs, which often bring with them a long list of serious side effects. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) sufferers often feel doomed to a life of pharmaceutical drugs – that is, until they stumble upon the wonderful healing effects of CBD.

Cannabis may suppress the power or emotional impact of traumatic memories through synergistic mechanisms that may facilitate rest or sleep in people with PTSD and make them feel less anxious and less preoccupied with flashback memories. The presence of endocannabinoid signaling systems in the stress-sensing nuclei of the hypothalamus as well as in limbic structures (amygdala) suggests the importance of this system in regulating neuroendocrine and behavioral responses to stress. Accumulating evidence suggests that cannabinoids may play a role in the extinction of fear and antidepressant effects.”

Bidirectional effects of cannabidiol on the extinction of contextual fear memory

A 2016 study. looked at cannabidiol’s ability to promote the extinction of contextual fear memory and showed that “under conditions of strong fear conditioning, CBD reduced contextual fear memory expression both acutely during an extinction session and later in a fear retention test.”

CBD and Schizophrenia: CBD as Antipsychotic

Research shows us many potential medical uses of cannabidiol or CBD. It has been found that this chemical compound derived from the cannabis plant could play a potential role in applications ranging from anxiety and depression to skin rashes and joint pain. One of the possible uses of CBD that has been researched for years is its potential in treating psychosis or schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that severely affects brain function in less than one percent of the United States population. Symptoms of the disorder usually first appear between the ages of 16 and 30, although children can also be diagnosed.

Symptoms are categorized in three ways: positive, negative and cognitive.

“Positive” symptoms include psychotic behaviors such as hallucinations, dysfunctional thinking and movement disorders.

“Negative” symptoms are more related to emotions and behaviors, such as a reduced sense of pleasure or difficulty initiating and completing tasks.

“Cognitive” symptoms vary in subtlety, but include problems focusing and problems applying new information, or “working memory”.

While the causes of schizophrenia are still not fully known, researchers believe it is caused by a combination of brain chemistry, genetic makeup and the environment. Treatment focuses on the symptoms of the illness rather than the illness itself. Even when symptoms appear to improve, schizophrenia requires lifelong treatment consisting of medication (antipsychotics), psychosocial therapy and, in severe cases, hospitalization.

But antipsychotic medication usually only treats positive symptoms – patients are still often left with negative and cognitive symptoms that often lead to anxiety, depression and impaired memory and problem-solving skills.

Patients with schizophrenia experience problems with natural brain chemicals such as neurotransmitters like dopamine and glutamate – brain disease affects the central nervous system and causes abnormal communication patterns between brain cells.

CBD, a non-toxic chemical compound (or “cannabinoid”) of cannabis, is now recognized as a treatment for schizophrenia after years of research into its antipsychotic effects. Some studies have shown that ingesting high concentrations of CBD in cannabis can result in fewer psychotic episodes. Evidence also suggests that it may help treat negative and cognitive symptoms that typical antipsychotic medications do not, and that it may have fewer side effects than conventional medications.

CBD is believed to limit the amount of dopamine (known as the “feel-good hormone”) that is blocked as a result of drug treatment when taken with antipsychotic medications. It can also help relieve hallucinations and delusions, which are positive symptoms of schizophrenia. While CBD research for schizophrenia is still in its infancy, many researchers are hopeful that CBD will eventually become established as an official treatment method.

Studies Supporting CBD Use for Psychosis and Schizophrenia

CBD research is still in its infancy, as legal restrictions and intense interest in the effects of THC have overshadowed cannabidiol for some time. But now experts are quickly realizing the enormous health potential of the cannabinoid, which is reflected in various studies on the effects of CBD on the brain and psychological disorders.

Scientists decided to explore CBD as a treatment for schizophrenia because of the close relationship between the body’s endocannabinoid system and our overall mental health. The endocannabinoid system works as a communication center between the brain and the body. It affects the way we act and react – and is influenced by phytocannabinoids, or compounds (such as THC and CBD) found in cannabis.

Due to the link between the endocannabinoid system and brain function, researchers have conducted studies confirming CBD as a potential alternative treatment for schizophrenia. More research is needed before cannabidiol can be officially recognized as a treatment for mental disorders, but for now the following studies help us understand the relationship between CBD and schizophrenia:

The antipsychotic-like effects of cannabidiol and rimonabant: A systematic review of animal and human studies.

A 2012 study aimed to establish a greater link between CBD and antipsychotic effects and concluded: “The results largely support the hypothesis of antipsychotic activity of both cannabinoids. In contrast, cannabidiol appears superior to rimonabant with a pharmacologic profile similar to atypical antipsychotic drugs.”

Improved social interaction, recognition and working memory with cannabidiol treatment in a rat model of prenatal infection (poly I:C).

A 2017 study revealed that CBD has a direct effect on social interaction, which may be beneficial for people with schizophrenia. The article concludes: “Chronic administration of CBD can alleviate social interaction and cognitive deficits caused by prenatal infection with poly I:C. These new findings offer interesting implications for the potential use of CBD in the treatment of cognitive deficits and social withdrawal in schizophrenia.”

A Note on CBD and Drug Interactions for Mental Health

CBD has a pretty solid safety profile and is even approved by the World Health Organization, but it is important to remember that there may be interactions with other medications you take on a daily basis. Just like you may find warnings on drug labels not to take your pills with grapefruit juice, CBD acts in a similar way, disrupting the effect of some medications. This is because CBD is metabolized by the cytochrome P450 enzyme group, the same liver enzyme group that is required to metabolize most prescription drugs. The interaction is usually not dangerous, but it causes a drop in liver enzyme levels after CBD ingestion, which can interfere with the absorption of other drugs. This interaction may pose some risk if the drug is intended to treat life-threatening symptoms.

But this effect of CBD on cytochrome P450 enzymes is temporary, just like grapefruit juice. It is usually sufficient to stagger doses to avoid an interaction between CBD and your regular medications, but you should always talk to your doctor about CBD before you start, especially if you are already taking anticonvulsants or other prescriptions every day.
