  6. Source Hemp We prefer brands that use pesticide-free (or organic) hemp grown in the USA and quality-tested before production. Extraction Method A safe extraction process is essential to produce a safe product. Supercritical CO2 extraction is the most popular as it requires no solvent. Food-grade ethanol extraction also produces high-quality formulas as long as the final product is tested to ensure that it is solvent-free. Ingredients A safe CBD product should also contain only safe ingredients. When it comes to CBD for dogs, all ingredients must be safe for the skin. You should also check the ingredient label for potential allergens that may affect you. Strength The strength of a product varies from product to product, but sometimes product labels can be misleading. Check whether the overall potency refers to the total amount of hemp extract or specifically to the CBD content of the product. Based on our personal experience and the above criteria, we have compiled a list of the best CBD products for dogs. We will discuss what makes them stand out, why we endorse the product and which pets can benefit the most from it. Global Broad Spectrum CBD: A CBD formula consisting mainly of CBD and containing “broad spectrum” natural cannabinoids derived from hemp. The broad spectrum CBD formula has eliminated all detectable traces of THC through a unique purification process. Full Spectrum CBD: Contains a broad spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes from the original hemp material, including up to 0.3% THC. CBD Isolate: A type of CBD formula that has been carefully refined to remove all minor cannabinoids other than CBD. COA stands for Certificate of Analysis – also known as a third-party laboratory test result. Things to consider before buying CBD oil for dogs Does CBD oil contain THC? While CBD is an excellent treatment option for pets, THC should not be given to animals. Dogs are much more sensitive to THC than humans, and mild to moderate doses of THC can cause psychoactive effects that last for days. Of course, most CBD products are made from federally permitted hemp material, meaning they contain less than 0.3% THC, which is not enough to cause psychoactive effects. Whether broad spectrum, CBD isolate or full spectrum CBD oil for dogs is best? There are many opinions about the best type of CBD formula for dogs. The reality is that different formulas may work better for different ailments and we currently don’t have enough evidence to say that one formula is better than another. Full spectrum CBD oil formulas and broad spectrum CBD oil formulas are often considered “more effective” because they offer the synergistic benefits of entourage action. However, CBD isolate still contains CBD and can be a cost-effective option for giving larger doses to your pet. What is the best dose of CBD for dogs? It is currently recommended to give your dog up to 2,2 mg of CBD per 5 kg body weight. Based on this recommendation, the maximum daily dose for a dog of the following weight: 10 lbs: approximately 22 mg: 35 lbs: approximately 79 mg: 50 lbs: approximately 113 mg: Keep in mind that this is a maximum dose estimate, so you may want to start with lower doses and slowly increase the dose over several days or weeks. You should also divide the dose into several doses each day, usually one dose every 8-12 hours. What are the risks of using CBD oil for dogs? The risk of side effects is minimal when the correct dosing protocol is followed, but side effects of CBD for dogs can include: Dry mouth Increased blood pressure Drowsiness Decreased appetite If you notice these side effects for an extended period of time or if you notice serious side effects after starting CBD, contact your veterinarian. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, a regulatory system found in all mammals. This means that many of the amazing effects of CBD for humans can also be carried over to dogs. Research into the use of cannabidiol for animals is still limited, but here’s what we know so far: Arthritis Osteoarthritis is one of the most common inflammatory conditions in dogs, and up to 60% of dogs will experience some degree of arthritis in their lifetime. Clinical studies have found that CBD may be a solution due to its effects on inflammatory pathways. One study concluded that “a dose of 2 mg/kg CBD twice daily can help increase comfort and activity in dogs with OA”. Pain The same anti-inflammatory benefits lead experts to believe that CBD may be useful for pain management, as seen in an experimental study in humans. This may be especially true for pain caused by inflammatory conditions, but there are currently no studies to confirm this benefit. Common inflammatory conditions that cause pain in dogs include dermatitis, conjunctivitis, colitis and pancreatitis. Epilepsy CBD as a treatment for epilepsy has been well studied in humans, but there is less data for dogs. One study has shown that CBD can reduce seizure frequency in dogs with intractable idiopathic epilepsy in combination with their usual medication. Anxiety Numerous anecdotal reports claim that CBD can help manage anxiety in dogs, but there is currently no evidence to support this claim. However, CBD has been touted as a potential treatment for anxiety disorders in several human studies. Cancer Various studies have confirmed the benefits of using CBD to address the side effects of cancer treatment, and research has even found that CBD has anti-cancer effects in in vitro studies. Studies on the use of CBD to treat cancer in dogs are much more limited. In one study, CBD was found to be effective in slowing cell proliferation in canine tumors. The anti-nausea effect, which is beneficial for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, has also been documented in animals, but studies have focused on rats rather than dogs. Can vets prescribe CBD oil for dogs? CBD products for dogs, cats and other pets are not currently approved by the FDA. Therefore, veterinarians are not currently allowed to recommend or prescribe CBD. However, you can consult your veterinarian about the risks and benefits of hemp extract for dogs. Since CBD is still a relatively new treatment option for dogs, you may need to find a veterinarian who has experience with the cannabinoid. Where to buy CBD for dogs in stores and online Since the 2018 Farm Bill effectively legalized CBD products derived from hemp (when produced according to certain guidelines), many CBD companies can ship their products anywhere in the United States. You can also find CBD for dogs in local stores, but you should be skeptical of any product that doesn’t come with third-party lab results. It is often better to buy CBD online, where you have the opportunity to compare products and delve deeper into brand quality standards. We have reviewed many different brands and products to make it easier for you to make a choice. Take a look at our CBD pet product reviews to get to know some of the best the industry has to offer. What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound derived from hemp that has been found to have a wide range of therapeutic effects in both humans and animals. It lacks the psychoactive effects associated with cannabis, making it a more acceptable treatment for dogs. It should not be confused with cannabis or marijuana, which contain high amounts of the psychoactive THC and should not be given to dogs.

How we review brands

In light of inconsistencies in cannabis industry regulations, We are committed to holding brands accountable for the quality, purity and potency of their products. We independently test products using a rigorous verification process designed to identify the best hemp-derived products on the market. We only recommend CBD that is safe and of the highest quality, we first make sure that the CBD companies we recommend meet these requirements:

Brand Reputation

It is clear to see that some brands have made a name for themselves in the industry. Many of the brands we offer are industry leaders in terms of quality and innovation. Of course, many smaller brands are ranked according to the quality factors listed below. If you are unsure, studying the opinions of other consumers is sometimes an excellent way to find safe and effective formulas.

Third Party Lab Tests

Checking the results of third party lab tests or a product’s certificate of analysis before you buy is the most important step you can take to ensure quality and safety. These tests should come from a third-party lab (not an in-house lab) and should detail the potency of cannabinoids and the purity of the product, such as the absence of heavy metals, pesticides, microbes and other harsh chemicals.

Source Hemp

We prefer brands that use pesticide-free (or organic) hemp grown in the USA and quality-tested before production.

Extraction Method

A safe extraction process is essential to produce a safe product. Supercritical CO2 extraction is the most popular as it requires no solvent. Food-grade ethanol extraction also produces high-quality formulas as long as the final product is tested to ensure that it is solvent-free.

Ingredients

A safe CBD product should also contain only safe ingredients. When it comes to CBD for dogs, all ingredients must be safe for the skin. You should also check the ingredient label for potential allergens that may affect you.

Strength

The strength of a product varies from product to product, but sometimes product labels can be misleading.

Global

  • Broad Spectrum CBD: A CBD formula consisting mainly of CBD and containing “broad spectrum” natural cannabinoids derived from hemp. The broad spectrum CBD formula has eliminated all detectable traces of THC through a unique purification process.
  • Full Spectrum CBD: Contains a broad spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes from the original hemp material, including up to 0.3% THC.
  • CBD Isolate: A type of CBD formula that has been carefully refined to remove all minor cannabinoids other than CBD. COA stands for Certificate of Analysis – also known as a third-party laboratory test result.

Things to consider before buying CBD oil for dogs

Does CBD oil contain THC?

Based on this recommendation, the maximum daily dose for a dog of the following weight:

  • 10 lbs: approximately 22 mg:
  • 35 lbs: approximately 79 mg:
  • 50 lbs: approximately 113 mg:

Keep in mind that this is a maximum dose estimate, so you may want to start with lower doses and slowly increase the dose over several days or weeks. You should also divide the dose into several doses each day, usually one dose every 8-12 hours.

What are the risks of using CBD oil for dogs?

The risk of side effects is minimal when the correct dosing protocol is followed, but side effects of CBD for dogs can include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Drowsiness
  • Decreased appetite

If you notice these side effects for an extended period of time or if you notice serious side effects after starting CBD, contact your veterinarian.
